Highland Cows Are Having a Moment, and Now They're Taking Over Christmas

The highland cow, the shaggy, ginger Scottish breed that became an internet favorite, is now one of the most popular motifs in American holiday shopping. Toy industry insiders tipped it as the next big plush trend at Toy Fair in February 2026, and highland cows now appear on holiday toys, Christmas decor and seasonal party goods.

What's trending

The highland cow has moved from Instagram feeds to the Christmas aisle. At Toy Fair in New York over Presidents Day weekend, industry insiders predicted highland cows would be the next major plush toy trend, following crazes like Labubu and capybaras, according to a February 2026 report. Their caramel fur and tousled mane, the report noted, appeal to children and adults alike.

The breed was already showing up in holiday gift guides. A Fox 13 holiday toy segment last November featured Chatter Chompers, a collectible line whose 12 characters include a highland cow. And major retailers now run dedicated Christmas highland cow pages, such as Walmart's Christmas highland cow holiday decor collection.

Why it's resonating

Part of it is simply the look. A January 2026 Morning Ag Clips feature on the breed's rise in the US described highland cattle as animals that "photographed beautifully, stood out in a pasture, and felt more 'storybook farm' than commercial beef operation." Social media did the rest, turning a hardy Scottish beef breed into a lifestyle symbol.

That demand shows up in real farm prices too. The same report noted that a one-month-old mini highland heifer sold for $24,500 at an online auction. It also cautioned that "these animals are still cows. They eat every day, grow up fast, test fences, and require real management."

For most fans, though, owning a highland cow isn't the point. The appeal is the cozy, storybook-farm feeling, and that fits Christmas perfectly: a shaggy cow in a Santa hat reads as warm, a little funny and nostalgic all at once.

Bringing the trend to the party

That's why highland cows are turning up on holiday party themes, from plush toys at the gift swap to cow ornaments on the tree. Hosts planning a farm-style or family Christmas party are carrying the motif onto their invitations as well. Our editable highland cow Christmas party invitation, for example, features a watercolor highland cow in a Santa hat peeking over a snowy farm fence, and can be texted or printed.

The bottom line

Toy trends come and go, but the highland cow has staying power because it taps into something bigger than a single product: a longing for cozy, storybook-farm warmth. Expect to see a lot more of that shaggy ginger face before the season is over.
